Born from one of the worst, most recent economic hardships of the Philipines, the Masskara was created to lift the spirits of the people and to bring back the smiles on their faces. The name MassKara means many faces. It came from a combination of “mass” meaning crowd, and “kara” from cara, Spanish word for face. It is also a pun on maskara, the Philippine word for mask (which came from the Spanish mascara), since mask adorned with a smiling face is the central prop of the festival in the City of Smiles.
MassKara Festival features a variety of events, including flamboyant parades full of colorful masks and sequin-adorned costumes, illuminated floats, street dances, concerts,, mouthwatering food festivals, agriculture-trade fairs, garden shows, and other special events organized every year.
Masskara Festival truly is a celebration of resilience and strength in faces of adversity and though times. It is a triumphant display that amidst various crisis, people still has reasons to smile and united optimism to turn darkness into different colorful shades. ~Moi Songco
